GENERAL INFORMATION
Dental Technicians are members of a self regulated profession. Dental Technician Regulation establishes a reserved act and a reserved title. No one may use the name Dental Technician, Certified Dental Technician or Registered Dental Technician nor can they provide the services of a Dental Technician unless he or she is registered with the College. (other health professions may have overlapping scopes of practice).
Self regulation allows members to superintend the practice of Dental Technology in BC, and to set and enforce standards for membership and for continuing practice.
Self regulation is founded on the underlying principle that Dental Technicians are committed to providing competent services in the public's best interest.
Dental Technicians may delegate their scope of practice to Registered Assistants and Students working under their supervision.
The College offices are located in Richmond. The offices are close to major traffic arteries, minutes away from Vancouver International Airport, and easily accessible by bus and the Canada Line Skytrain.
The offices are staffed by:
College licensure examinations are coordinated by Mr. Ronald Revell, RDT, with the assistance of Mr. Karol Hoffman, RDT. We have approximately 15 examiners.
The Board has, under the Act, 5 elected Dental Technicians, 1 elected Assistant, and three public members appointed by BC's Board Resourcing and Development Office. The term of office for each elected Member is three years and the Board holds elections when necessary to fill vacancies. The Board meets at least 4 times per year and observers are welcome. Please contact the Registrar at least 10 days prior to a scheduled Board Meeting if you would like to attend.
The Board has many committees composed of Board members and Registrants.
There are approximately 485 Dental Technicians and 590 Dental Technician Assistants providing services in about 320 dental laboratories throughout British Columbia. Most laboratories are small businesses, although some employ 40 or more Registrants.
